인 생 찬 가

인생은 한낱 허황된 꿈일뿐이라며
슬픈 사연으로 내게 말하지 마라.

잠들어버린 영혼은 곧 죽음이며
세상의 진실은 겉모습만은 아니란다.

인생은 존재 그 자체!
인생은 진지한 것!
무덤이 그 목표일리는 없다.

너는 본래 흙이라,
흙으로 돌아가리라,
하지만 너의 영혼을 두고 한 말은 아니었다.

우리가 가야 할 곳,
혹은 가는 길은
향락이 아니고
슬픔도 아니며,
내일의 하루가 오늘보다 낫다는
희망의 그것이 인생이리라.

Tell me not, in mournful numbers,
Life is but an empty dream!
For the soul is dead that slumbers,
And things are not what they seem.

Life is real! Life is earnest!
And the grave is not its goal;
Dust thou art, to dust returnest,
Was not spoken of the soul.

Not enjoyment, and not sorrow,
Is our destined end or way;
But to act, that each tomorrow
Find us further than today.

Art is long, and time is fleeting,
And our hearts, though stout and brave,
Still, like muffled drums, are beating
Funeral marches to the grave.

In the world"s broad field of battle,
In the bivouac of Life,
Be not like dumb, driven cattle!
Be a hero in the strife!

Trust no Future, howe"er pleasant!
Let the dead Past bury its dead!
Act,-act in the living Present!
Heart within, and God o"erhead!

Lives of great men all remind us
We can make our lives sublime,
And, departing, leave behind us
Footprints on the sands of time;

Footprints, that perhaps another,
Sailing o"er life"s solemn main,
A forlorn and shipwrecked brother,
Seeing shall take heart again.

Let us, then, be up and doing,
With a heart for any fate;
Still achieving, still pursing,
Learn to labor and to wait.

인생은 한낱 공허한 꿈에 지나지 않는다고!
영혼은 죽는 게 아니고 잠드는 것이니,
만물의 본질은 겉모습 대로만은 아니다.

인생이란 실재이며, 인생은 진지하다!
무덤이 우리의 종착역이 될 수는 없느니;
"너는 원래 흙이니 흙으로 돌아가리라."
이것은 영혼에 대한 말이 아니었다.

우리가 가야 할 곳, 또한 가는 길은
쾌락도 아니요, 슬픔도 아니다;
저마다 내일이 오늘보다 낫도록
행동하는 그것이 인생이니라.

예술은 길고 세월은 순식간에 흘러가느니,
우리 심장이 설령 튼튼하고 용감하더라도
마치 천으로 감싼 북과 같이 둔탁하게
무덤을 향해 장송 행진곡을 울리는구나.

세상의 넓은 전쟁터에서,
인생의 야영지에서,
말 못하고, 쫓기는 짐승이 되지 말고
싸움에 이기는 영웅이 되라!

미래를 믿지 말라, 비록 아무리 즐거울지라도
죽은 과거는 죽은 채로 묻어두라!
행동하라. 살아 있는 현재에  행동하라!
가슴속에는 용기가 있고, 머리위에는 신이 있다.

위인들의 모든 생애는 말해주노니,
우리도 숭고한 삶을 이룰 수 있고,
이 세상 떠날 때는 시간의 모래위에
우리 발자국을 남길 수 있음을.

그 발자국, 아마도 훗날 다른 사람이
장엄한 인생의 바다를 항해하다가,
외롭게 파도에 난파하는 때를 만나면,
보고서 다시금 용기를 얻게 될지니.

그러니, 우리 쉬지 않고 일하리라.
어떠한 운명도 헤쳐나갈 정신으로,,
끊임없이 성취하고 추구하면서
일하고 기다리기를 힘써 배우라.
