사막에 사는 식물 대부분은 선인장이나 퀴버나무처럼 증산작용을 최소화하기 위해 잎의 표면적이 작아지는 방향으로 진화했죠.
그런데 나미비아 나미브 사막에는 ‘이단아’ 하나가 살고 있습니다. 바로, 풍성하고 거대한 잎이 덩굴처럼 휘감겨 있는
‘웰위치아’란 식물이죠.
생김새부터 범상치 않은 녀석의 정식 명칭은 ‘웰위치아 미라빌리스’!
1859년, 발견자인 오스트리아 식물학자 프리드리히 웰위치의 이름을 따서 지어졌으며, 미라빌리스는 라틴어로 ‘경이로운’이란 뜻인데요.
이름처럼 이들은 꽤나 특이한 생태를 지녔죠.

셀 수 없이 많아 보이지만, 사실 녀석의 잎은 단 ‘2개’입니다.
